Awesome post Windows install site

Filed under: Technical — admin @ 2:01 pm

Just found out about this site today, and you all need to know about it!  How many times do you spend about 2 hours reloading applications like Adobe Reader, Flash, anti-virus, Firefox, Chrome and other applications after reloading with Windows XP/Vista/7?  Look no further:

Microsoft Reimaging

Filed under: Technical — admin @ 12:30 am

So this used to be a touchy subject!  I used to work with vendors such as CDW that wanted to sell me licensing through our Microsoft Volume license key program to make sure all of our computers were covered.  However, we had a fleet of laptop with Windows XP Pro on them, OEM.  Why should I have to pay for software licensing twice, just to maintain company (Ghost, Acronis) images?  This has never been the case.  This used to be a grey area too, until I found the document from Microsoft reimaging.doc.  In this document, they describe that it is in agreement with their EULA to be able to reimage a computer that has OEM licensing with a volume license key as long as the software is identical.  So for XP Pro, use XP Pro VLK.  Same goes for Office, but you have to be careful that not only the version matches, but that all the components match as well.  Here is the document in full, and a link at the bottom of the page for more useful MS licensing docs:

Kill the apostophe quick find in Firefox

Filed under: Technical — admin @ 12:09 am

OK, so this is a big fat pain in the ass.  You go to type the apostrohpe in Firefox (‘) when editing a forum post or adding comments to a picture in Facebook, and this “feature” comes up to do a quick search in the bottom of the window of Firefox.  One fix is to resize the window, but ultimately, you need to install the “searchhotkeys” plugin and disable the hot keys.  Download and here:

SearchHotKeys FF Plugin for 3.0-3.5

After downloading, drag and drop the .xpi file onto a Firefox window to install it.  Sorry for the inconvenience, still researching how to deploy FF extensions properly.

Then open a new tab and in the address bar, type in “about:config” without quotes.  Search the filter for “searchkeys.disable.all” and set it to true to disable this annoying “feature”.
