Using Vista as an administrative workstation

So. You’ve decided you need to use Vista on your domain to create/edit/delete user accounts, and you have Exchange on the network too? Microsoft has finally improved this functionality with Microsoft Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Router wireless security

Filed under: Technical — admin @ 10:15 am

A word or two about wireless security on your home network. Most of us are running a Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, Belkin, or some form of broadband router at home to connect all of our PC’s to the internet. Nothing is more frustrating than finding your neighbor connected to your router eating up valuable bandwidth.

WEP/WPA/WPA2

So we implement security. In the past, WEP was the only form of security, but with a Linux laptop and a couple of hours, it was easily cracked. Then cam WPA and WPA2, respectively which offer better security. I definitely recommend either of these technologies, WPA or WPA2, but there is a better way, and you can leave your access point open, making it easier to connect to without having to remember a cryptic passphrase. This solution isn’t for everyone, it just depends on how comfortable you are with accessing your router and working with it. You might also want to allow a large number of computers to access your wireless, so if this is the case, consider using WPA or WPA2.

MAC Address Filtering

Filtering by MAC address allows you to control which network cards can access your wireless network. All routers I’ve worked with have this feature. Your MAC address is the serial number assigned to your network interface by the manufacturer. To determine your MAC address, open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig /all

Enter the MAC address into the MAC address table provided by your router and you’re all set!

bb-memory 3.1

This external script will perform tests on memory for Linux, including physical memory, actual memory and swap memory. Download it here. Here are the instructions, pretty easy:

Animas One Touch Ping review

Filed under: Technical — admin @ 12:07 pm

Wanted to write up a review on my new Animas One Touch Ping insulin pump since I got it a month ago. I’m really enjoying the freedom on pump therapy vs. the old way of doing things, long acting insulin twice a day by shot and short acting insulin prior to meals the same way. Getting my blood glucose under tight control was really hard, but through the use of pump therapy, my BG’s are getting much better as I get used to it.

Important features

Some of the important feature include:

  • Insulin on board
    • Measures the amount of insulin delivered previously to avoid stacking of insulin and low BG’s
  • Bolus calculator
    • BG calculator adjusts for high BG’s
    • Carb calculator will calculate meals by carb count based on your BG
  • Combo bolus for delayed bolus for high fat meals
  • Remote BG meter with full pump functions for wireless pumping!
    • 500 food database on the remote meter to help calculate with the carb calculator. Customizable food database using ezManager Max software
  • Multiple basal rates can be programmed for different basal rates depending on time of day
  • Multiple basal programs for sick days, temp basal, etc
  • Upload your own tunes using the ezManager Max software
  • Reports can be generated using ezManager Max software
