Symantec Backup Exec 11D & Linux

Filed under: Technical — admin @ 2:36 pm

In order to backup Linux servers using Symantec BE 11D, we need to deploy the BE remote agent on the Linux server.  First we download BEWS_11D.7170_LINUX-UNIX-MAC-NT4_AGENTS.2.tar.gz.  You will find this download through your account with Symantec at http://licensing.symantec.com.  I downloaded this file using my Windows BE server and shared the folder out.  Once shared, I mounted the CIFS share on my Linux server using:

Automating Office (2007 & 2010) Installation

Filed under: Technical — admin @ 1:58 pm

Just got my hands on Office 2010 here the other day on my MSDN account, still in beta.  Probably been there a while, but I just got it anyway…  So I just want to jot down how to make updates to both Office 2007 as well as 2010, to customize your setup, embed your volume license MAK key, set installation options, etc.

Sacred 2

Filed under: Technical — admin @ 12:55 am

Ascaron entertainment came out with one hell of a game here.  If you’re waiting on Diablo 3, wait no further, this game is awesome.  After the developers put so much time into the world of Sacred 2, Ascaron went belly up.  I’m not sure if the reason was related to a delayed release date, or what, but Digital River ended up buying up the Ascaron devs.  The world of Sacred 2 is comprised of 7 continents and I’m taking a guess here at a thousand quests, but possibly more.  Anyway, I’ve been hooked, and have my character up to 27th level with his chosen mount, here’s a few screenshots, enjoy:

ADModify

Filed under: Technical — admin @ 4:10 pm

I breifly mentioned ADModify in another article and wanted to clarify what I’m talking about.  I use this tool to perform bulk edits to active directory, very useful.  Need to use it right now in fact, so I’m going to keep this short for now.  Click here to download ADModify.NET.  You need to have .NET installed.  I’m not sure if 1.1 is enough, but I’m pretty sure that’s all you need to get going.  You can install .NET at http://update.microsoft.com.

How to copy a DVD movie

Filed under: Technical — admin @ 10:32 pm

This guide is based on four programs:

  • RipIt4Me
  • DVD Decrypter
  • DVD Shrink
  • FixVTS

I know there are tools out there you can pay for that are more of an all in one program, but these tools are free, and it’s relatively easy to configure and use.  Most all of your newer title DVD’s are going to have some sort of encryption algorithm they use.  With the help of RipIt4Me and DVD Decrypter, the movies can be ripped to your hard drive, removing this protection.  DVD Shrink compresses the movie into a format that you can later burn to 4.7 GB or 8.54 GB on dual layer.  Let’s get started:

Left4Dead2

Filed under: Technical — admin @ 9:25 pm

Well, I’ve always been a big gamer until recent years.  I’ve been gaming since Duke Nuke Em, Doom and Mechwarrior (version 1 on EGA graphics) came out.  Around 1996 we formed a clan called Texas Gamers Anonymous, based in the Dallas, TX area.  We played on and off for many years together, and held LAN parties as often as we could, playing many many different titles.

I won’t go into our history that much in this article, but it is worth mentioning as I still game with some of these guys from time to time, and they would all tell you there is nothing like gaming with TGA for an entire weekend.  Our latest efforts were based on Battlefield 1942, the game that sparked a lot of add-ons, and the world of Battlefield 1942: Desert Combat, Battlefield Vietnam and eventually Battlefield 2, which is a more arcade feeling version of Desert Combat, made with the help of Desert Combat developers.  We played cooperatively against the forces of evil across the internet, and we took names and killed em all.

I picked up Left4Dead2 on a Black Friday special over at Steam.  I never did get a chance to play the first of this series, Left4Dead, but always heard good, addictive things about it.  So this is my first experience of this game type, let me be clear.  Before L4D2 demo, I tried out Killing Floor demo.  I have to say, I didn’t care for it much, and if L4D was going to be anything like that, I honestly didn’t care for it.  My experience was the opposite.  The AI is so life like in L4D2, I was hooked immediately.  Plus the gameplay adds a lot to the experience.  4 survivors vs. a world of undead, and these undead don’t move around like you saw on Return of the Living Dead or anything, the can MOVE.  In this version are Spitters that spit burning acid on you, and the ground around you, Boomers that spit goo on you and explode, Jockey’s that are a bunch of head humpers that steer your character away from everything, including safety, Chargers that will take you down, Smokers that can incapacitate you, Hunters that can fuck you up, and Witches, that can REALLY fuck you up.

Some of the weapons you have at your disposal, shotguns, combat shotguns, M-16′s, rifles of many kinds, pistols or dual pistols, swords, machete’s, axes, chain saws, baseball bats, guitars, frying pans, the list goes on.  The melee weapons, such as swords are nice for up close and personal combat.  You can slice your way through hordes of these zombies with a good sword or machete.  Anyway, my point for this whole article, check out some of the pics:

Hidden Windows Password

Filed under: Technical — admin @ 8:39 pm

I personally like to boot my home computer up and not have to mess with typing in a password.  I also like to set up my client’s (of friend’s) computers the same way, but I still need a password on their account in order to help them via Remote Desktop under their profile when things come up.  Windows asks you to create a user account and assign a password, this is typically what I do during setup, but if not you can always create the account after the fact too.  If you’re reading this, you should know how to do this, but if not, just comment and I’ll expand the post.

Awesome post Windows install site

Filed under: Technical — admin @ 2:01 pm

Just found out about this site today, and you all need to know about it!  How many times do you spend about 2 hours reloading applications like Adobe Reader, Flash, anti-virus, Firefox, Chrome and other applications after reloading with Windows XP/Vista/7?  Look no further:
