How to copy a DVD movie

Filed under: Technical — admin @ 10:32 pm

This guide is based on four programs:

  • RipIt4Me
  • DVD Decrypter
  • DVD Shrink
  • FixVTS

I know there are tools out there you can pay for that are more of an all in one program, but these tools are free, and it’s relatively easy to configure and use.  Most all of your newer title DVD’s are going to have some sort of encryption algorithm they use.  With the help of RipIt4Me and DVD Decrypter, the movies can be ripped to your hard drive, removing this protection.  DVD Shrink compresses the movie into a format that you can later burn to 4.7 GB or 8.54 GB on dual layer.  Let’s get started:

Install Software

Let’s start by installing DVD Decrypter, followed by DVD Shrink (Click the link to download the software :) ).  Follow the defaults on both setups, but you don’t have to put shortcuts on the desktop and you don’t have to launch the software at the end.

Now let’s download both RipIt4Me and FixVTS (again, just click the link).  Notice these are both zip files, so open them in your favorite compression utility.  Here I’m using WinRAR, but the important thing is to simply extract them to a folder on your hard drive.  I chose to use C:\ripit4me:

Now let’s extract FixVTS into the same folder:

fixvts1 ripit2

Now simply open C:\ripit4me and right click, drag and drop RipIt4Me.exe to your desktop and “create shortcut”.  Rename it to your liking.

Setting preferences

If you’ve followed my instruction above to the letter, you should not have to mess with your preferences, but you might need to do this to make sure.  Go ahead and open RipIt4Me and click on Logs/Settings, Preferences.  Toward the bottom you should see a path to each of the three programs we installed alongside RipIt4Me.

Ripping the movie

Let’s get started.  Once you’ve got your preferences set, click on Wizard Mode.

ripit3

You should of course already have your movie in your DVD drive.  If you have more than one drive, pick the drive you are ripping from, and the folder on your hard drive that you’re going to rip to and click next.

We want to create the PSL for DVD Decrypter, so click on Create PSL.

ripit5

Now click Rip DVD.

ripit6

You will encounter an error here.  I’m not sure why it does not pick up the PSL file, but it doesn’t.  You will see an error like:

ripitoops

Traverse to the folder you are ripping the movie to, in this case C:\Dirty Duck:

Choose the PSL file you see there and double click and you will be greeted with the following success:

ripit7

Now you should be looking at DVD Decrypter, so click where highlighted in this screenshot to start ripping:

ripit8

This process will take around 20 minutes, depending on the length of the movie:

ripit9

After that’s done, it’s time for IFO cleanup, go ahead and click Do It!

ripit10

Then click on Process with FixVTS.

ripit11

This process will take a little time using FixVTS.

fixvts2

This brings us back to step 4 and this time we want to Open with DVD Shrink:

ripit12

This opens our movie in DVD Shrink:

We want to backup the movie now, so click backup and instead of using your burner, let’s pull the drop down menu down and choose ISO instead:

ripit15

Click on OK and it will start encoding the movie:

ripit16

Again, success:

Open up C:\Dirty Duck (or the name of your movie’s folder) and you will see the  ISO file.  You can use many programs to burn ISO files, such as Nero, but I like to use ImgBurn which you can download free at http://www.imgburn.com/

Also, now that you have an ISO file, you can delete all the VOB files that were created in C:\Dirty Duck.  You can also keep your ISO’s in a folder such as C:\Movies and just delete the entire folder for C:\Dirty Duck.  Comment below if there are any questions or issues!
