Check out some of the codec packs they have over at http://www.ninite.com. If you scroll down to the media area, you can download CCCP, which I've had really good luck with on Vista/7 platforms. CCCP may tell you that you need the latest version of Direct X 9. What they really mean is the latest Direct X Runtime, which can be obtained here:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=35

Making sure DX is up to date may help solve some of the issues you are seeing.

@Saul and @aki, do you have Windows Vista 64 bit ? If so you need to install Vista Codec Pack for 64bit. It fixed my problem on Win Vista 64 bit.

Blank. Black. Edited whole video in WMM. Went to publish it. Got thick green bar on bottom. Got rid of DIVx, now video preview is black.
I am so goddamn frustrated. I've never had this issue before.
I'm a damned n00b, that's the problem. I don't even know what a codec is.
I downloaded some youtube vids using keepvid, then converted them using flvtoavi....
and the edited video will not publish correctly.
I read it's a Windows Movie maker/Windows Vista issue.
I read it's a Divx issue, I red it's a codec issue....
I've lost all hope, now my video will sit and rot... I've tried everything... all audio, no visual, I can edit in pics and they work..... If I could tear off my face I would...

Thank you for sharing this! After learning how to sync audio with this lightweight out of the box video editing software, this really gets the most out of Movie Maker!

I had this problem at one time, and the solution to it was this:
Go to . In the options, choose and click .
Recently, the problem cropped up again when trying to edit a video encoded with Matroska (.mkv) I followed all of the suggestions from various websites, and nothing seemed to work, including the solution to turn off Xvid, DivX, and the 'Compatibility Renderer' solution copypasta above (Thanks to Bernie Zimmerman). I was about to give up. Then, I downloaded the most recent DivX codec from http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus, and the Green Bar is gone! I can't be entirely certain that this will work for you, but if it does...
Glad to be of help
