If you scroll down to the media area, you can download CCCP, which I've had really good luck with on Vista/7 platforms. CCCP may tell you that you need the latest version of Direct X 9. What they really mean is the latest Direct X Runtime, which can be obtained here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=35 Making sure DX is up to date may help solve some of the issues you are seeing.
